While most of your account's settings apply to every client in your account, you have the option to customize some of them in a client’s profile.
This helps when a client has special terms or allowances, like a longer payment window, a different billing method, or a tax exemption.
You can configure your account-wide defaults and then adjust those defaults for clients who need something different. This also applies to Client Notifications; you can change these on a per-client basis.
Before You Start
Here are a few things to know before you continue:
- We recommend that only the Account Owner(s) or main Office Admin(s) change a client’s settings.
- Changes you make in a client’s profile only apply to that particular client. All of your other clients keep following your account-wide settings.
- Changes to a client's Notification Settings section auto-save.
- Changes to a client's Client Settings section DON'T auto-save; don't forget to click the "Update" button at the bottom to save your changes!
- Most settings in a client’s profile match a global setting that lives somewhere else in your Docket account, but there are a few that only appear in a client's profile (covered below).
Customize a Client’s Settings
The Client Settings button in a client’s profile opens a list of settings you can change for that client.
Please Note: Most settings in the list matches what's in your account-wide settings, but there are a few that only appear in a client's profile (covered below).
There are a few common reasons to customize a client’s settings:
- Offer different payment terms, such as giving a long-term commercial client 30 days to pay while your other clients keep your standard terms.
- Offer a different billing method, like when billing trusted or long-term rental clients in arrears through charges while your other clients get an invoice up front.
- Apply different fuel surcharges, like when clients have a different-than-standard negotiated rate.
- Offer different rental lengths, like when needing a longer default rental for a client who keeps dumpsters on site for weeks.
- Apply a different tax status, such as when clients are tax-exempt.
To customize a client’s settings, follow the instructions below:
- From within a client's profile, click on “Client Settings” in the top right corner.
- Click to expand the section that holds the setting you want to change and make your adjustment(s).
- Click on “Update” at the bottom of the list.
Docket will now use the adjusted settings for this client moving forward.
Please Note: If you want to revert a client's settings back to match your global defaults, you'll need to do that setting-by-setting since there's no bulk revert option at this time. The exception is for client-specific billing overrides; there's a "Remove Client Override" button for both Dumpster Management and Rental Management.
Global Settings in Client Profiles
The majority of settings available to be customized in a client profile correspond to a global setting that lives somewhere else in your Docket account. These global settings are what control the defaults for all clients.

Settings Only Available in Client Profiles
A few settings exist only in a client’s profile and have no global setting counterpart.
Balance Forward
This setting defaults to $0.
Find this in the Billing section.
This setting controls the amount of money a client owes your business that isn’t tied to an invoice, like an unpaid balance from your previous system.
Please Note: Docket doesn’t count invoices against this amount or deduct payments from it, so you’ll need to update it manually as the amount changes.
Cards On File
This setting shows all of the credit/debit cards saved for this client, regardless of whether they were added by you/your team or the client through their Client Dashboard.
Find this in the Billing section.
This setting is how you can:
- Save new credit/debit cards for a client.
- Remove existing credit/debit cards for a client.
- Select a default credit/debit card to charge for a client's autopay on recurring invoices.
- Reset a client’s connection to your payment processor.
Please Note: Clicking “Disconnect From Processor” removes the link between the client’s profile, their saved cards, and your payment processor. All the cards on file for that client will be completely and immediately removed from their profile and Client Dashboard, and you or they will need to re-save them.
Project Names
This setting is BLANK by default.
Find this in the Billing section.
This setting controls which, if any, project names apply to this client. You can use project names in your pricing matrix to price those projects differently from the client’s default rates. Click here to learn more about the Project Name Pricing feature in Docket.
To add a name to the client's profile, type it into the field and click on the + button. To remove a name from the client's profile, click on the trash can icon next to it.
Sales Rep
This setting is UNASSIGNED by default.
Find this in the Billing section.
This setting controls which employee won the client so you can report on your sales reps' volume.
If the global Show Sales Rep on Estimates & Invoices setting is turned on in your account, the sales rep’s name will appear on that client’s estimates and invoices.
Please Note: If the global Show Sales Rep setting is turned on in your account, Docket will auto-add the sales rep you select in a client's profile to all of the tasks created for that client. HOWEVER, if the global Assign to Logged In Employee setting is ALSO turned on, the employee who creates the client's task will be added as the sales rep on that task instead. The sales rep in the client's profile won't change though.
Tax Exempt
This setting is turned OFF by default.
Find this in the Billing section.
This setting controls whether or not a client needs to pay tax on your services, like nonprofits.
Allow Card Payments
This setting is turned ON by default.
Find this in the Client Dashboard section.
This setting controls whether a client is able to use a credit/debit card when paying invoices online from their Client Dashboard.
TIP: If you're set up with DocketPay, we suggest leaving this on.
Request Reviews
This setting is turned ON by default.
Find this in the Client Dashboard section.
This setting controls whether or not Docket automatically requests an online review from your clients after a rental is finished.
Please Note: You must have the global Dumpster Rental Review setting OR the global Rental Review setting in your account turned on in order for this setting to work. If both of the global settings are turned off, the client profile setting won't trigger a review request.
Account ID
This setting defaults to a unique ID that Docket auto-generates.
Find this in the General section.
This setting controls what Account ID Docket automatically created for this client's profile. The ID appears at the top of a client's profile and, if the global Display Client Account ID setting is turned on in your account, on the client's estimates and invoices.
Priority
This setting defaults to NONE.
Find this in the General section.
This setting controls a task's default priority level whenever one is created for this client.
This helps when you want to prioritize tasks for high-value clients during daily route optimization.
Customize a Client’s Notifications
Docket periodically sends your clients emails and texts about their tasks, invoices, documents, and more.
The Notification Settings section in a client’s profile lets you turn each email or text on or off for that one client.
This helps when a client asks to stop getting certain messages, prefers texts over emails, or wants a PDF copy of their invoice attached to every receipt when you don't generally include them.
TIP: All of the notifications in a client's profile map one-to-one to your global Client Notifications list.
To customize a client’s notifications, follow the instructions below:
- From within a client's profile, click into the “Notification Settings” section.
- Click to expand the section that holds the notification you want to change OR use the search box at the top to find a specific notification.
- Adjust the toggle to turn a communication option on or off.
TIP: If the global setting is not enabled in your account, you'll see a message about it.
Docket auto-saves your changes as you make them and will use the adjusted notification for this client moving forward.
Please Note: A client’s profile only lets you turn each notification on or off. The message text and scheduled time come from your global settings, and apply to every client.
