QR Codes give you a fast, reliable way to track dumpster and equipment assets in the field. Instead of manually looking up an asset in Docket, your drivers can scan a tag and pull up the exact record right away.
You can generate QR Code images directly from your existing asset PINs and then order printed, durable tags from any supplier you choose.
Once your tags are on your assets, scanning one in Docket's mobile app links straight to that asset's record since your PINs are already encoded.
Before You Start
Here are a few things to know before you continue:
- We recommend that only the Account Owner(s) or main Office Admin(s) generate QR Codes.
- Your assets need to be assigned PINs in Docket before you can generate their QR Codes.
- You can order printed tags from any supplier that offers durable, scannable printing.
Generating QR Code Images
Every QR Code needs to link back to the right asset in Docket and that only happens if the Code itself is generated inside Docket.
A generic QR Code maker won't encode your asset's PIN so scanning it wouldn't pull up anything in your account.
Generating the images in Docket first makes sure each code is tied to the correct asset before you send it to your supplier for printing.
There are two ways to generate QR Codes in Docket:
- Use your current list of PINs tied to existing assets in your account.
- Upload a custom list of PINs, regardless of whether they're tied to existing assets in your account.
Please Note: If you upload a custom list of PINs, you need to make sure that they're associated with existing assets in your account at some point otherwise Docket won't be able to connect the QR Code with an asset when a driver scans it.
To check whether an asset has an associated PIN, just look at the PIN field in its profile.
If you want to upload a list of specific PINs to turn into QR Codes, just use this Excel template.
Generate QR Codes for Existing PINs
To generate QR Codes for your current PINs in Docket, just follow the instructions below:
- In your Docket account, click "+ New" in the top left.
- Click on "Generate QR Codes" from the list that appears.
- Click "Current Assets" from the prompt that appears.
- Click "Confirm" to generate the QR Code images.
- A new prompt will appear showing you how many individual downloads to expect. Each individual download (batch) contains 15 QR Code images for 15 different asset PINs.
Please Note: There's no way to stop the generation after you click "Confirm" and it'll prevent you from working in Docket while the images are downloading, so make sure you have a few minutes to spare if you have a lot of asset PINs!
Each batch is auto-downloaded onto your device and you'll see confirmation in your browser's downloads list. - Once all the batches are downloaded, you'll see zipped folders in your device's downloads folder (or wherever your device has web downloads end up).
If you open a folder and look at the image, you'll see a QR Code and the PIN it's tied to.
You can now send those images to whichever supplier you've chosen to work with so they can print them out for you.
Generate QR Codes for Uploaded PINs
To generate QR Codes for a specific list of PINs, just follow the instructions below:
- In your Docket account, click "+ New" in the top left.
- Click on "Generate QR Codes" from the list that appears.
- Click "Upload Assets" from the prompt that appears.
- Click "Select File" to generate the QR Code images.
TIP: Use this Excel template to upload your PINs. - Once the file is added, click "Upload" so Docket can ingest your PINs.
- After Docket's ingested your list, click "Confirm" to generate the QR Codes.

Choose a QR Code Supplier
You can order QR code stickers/tags from any supplier that meets your business needs. Docket doesn't maintain an exclusive supplier relationship, so you’re free to choose the supplier that best fits your operations and budget.
When selecting a supplier, look for vendors that offer:
Durable, scannable asset tags made for outdoor and heavy-use environments.
-
Options for different materials, sizes, and layouts.
Vinyl, aluminum, and polyester tend to last the longest in field environments.
-
Sample tags to test before full production.
You may want to confirm that your stickers/tags will have a high-contrast print and your company information will be included, like asset name, company name, logo, etc...
Easy reordering for replacements or fleet expansion.
Choosing a supplier experienced with QR code printing can simplify setup and help reduce scanning or assignment errors.
TIP: Ask your supplier to provide proofs or test scans before finalizing your order to confirm compatibility with Docket's scanning system.
Install and Use QR Codes
Once you receive your printed QR Codes, physically attach them to the corresponding assets so your drivers can start scanning them using Docket's mobile app. Since your PINs are already encoded, the QR codes will automatically link to the correct asset records.
The "QR Code Scanner" button will appear to your drivers when they go to complete a task and are asked to enter the asset's PIN.
TIP: Keep your originally generated QR Code image files on hand for replacements. You can reorder from any supplier at any time using the original files.
