The Route Editor is how Docket turns your daily trash collection operation into a repeatable, driver-ready system.
Instead of manually assigning stops each morning, you build your routes once and let Docket do the rest. The right driver gets the right stops on the right days, every week, without any additional setup required.
TIP: A Route is a "shell" that you fill with ad-hoc and recurring stops; it doesn't generate them on its own. Until you add stops to a route, the assigned driver won't have anything to complete.
Before You Start
Here are a few things to know before you continue:
- You'll need Admin or Office Staff-level permissions to create and edit Recurring Routes.
- You'll need to add your vehicles and drivers in Docket before creating routes so you can assign them during setup. See Add a Vehicle (Truck) and Add and Remove an Employee (User) if you haven't done that yet.
- You'll need to add your yards in Docket before creating a route because Start Yard and End Yard are required. See Add a Yard if you haven't done that yet.
- You'll need to add your territories in Docket before assigning a territory to a route. This is optional.
Create a Route
Setting up a route is a one-time task that keeps your drivers on schedule without any daily setup. Once a route is created with the right vehicle, driver, and yard information it runs automatically on the days and times you set.
To create a route, just follow the instructions below:
- From anywhere in your account, click the "+ New" button in the top-left corner.
- Click on "Route" from the menu that appears.
- Give the route a Name.
TIP: We strongly recommend creating one route per day rather than mixing multiple days into a single route. If you have stops that run Monday, Wednesday, Friday, set up three separate routes and make the route names specific to the region/service type/day, like "North Side Residential Friday." This keeps your Route Tracker clean and makes daily management much easier. - Add a Description, if desired.
- Select a Route Color. This color will appear when viewing the route on a map, like in the Route Tracker, and is helpful when telling different routes apart.
- Select a Vehicle to assign to this route.
- Select a Driver to assign to this route.
TIP: The Assignment Information section sets the defaults for this route. When the route runs, it'll automatically appear for the assigned driver on the next scheduled run with no additional setup required each day. - Select one or more Territories, if needed.
- Add a Start Date.
TIP: Select the next upcoming occurrence if the route is active and ready to run, or a future date if you're setting it up in advance. - Add the Expected Start Time for when the assigned driver is expected to leave the Start Yard.
- Select the Start Yard.
TIP: If you have a primary yard selected in your settings, both the start yard and the end yard will auto-fill for you. You can change them if needed. -
Select the End Yard. This can be the same as your Start Yard or a different one.
Please Note: If you haven't added any yards to your account yet, you'll see a prompt to add one.
- Select the Frequency this route will run on.
- Select how often the route will repeat.
- Select the Day(s) of the Week the route will run on. You can also preview the route on a calendar to make sure everything looks correct.
- Click "Create Route".
You'll now see your new route in your Route Editor list.
Please Note: A Route doesn't generate stops on its own. Until you add stops to this route, the assigned driver won't have anything to complete.
View and Edit a Route
Once your routes are set up, you have two ways to view or edit them depending on what you need to do.
Side Panel
When you click on a route, a side panel will appear on the right with three tabs.
Stops is where you'll see all the stops currently assigned to this route and a way to open their details page.
Configuration is where you'll see/edit the route's current setup along with any adjustments that have been made to it.
Occurrences is where you'll see all the scheduled occurrences for this route. Each occurrence can be viewed in the Route Tracker or paused by using the Actions buttons.
Route Details Page
If you click on the Actions icon across from a route, that route's details page will open.
TIP: You can also click the actions icon at the top of the route editor.
This page provides more information about the route and is where you can view all of the route's stops on a map, reorder the stops, and optimize the route.
Stops is where you'll see all the stops currently assigned to this route. It mimics the Route Tracker so you can transfer stops from another route, reorder the route's current stops, and optimize the route among other things and a way to open their details page.
Configuration is where you'll see/edit the route's current setup along with any adjustments that have been made to it. This is also where you're able to delete the entire route.
Occurrences is where you'll see all the scheduled occurrences for this route. Each occurrence can be viewed in the Route Tracker or paused/unpaused here.
